How ChoiceDx Dx-Self Creates a New K-Beauty Experience

The purpose of international travel to Korea is changing.

Spending is expanding beyond shopping and dining toward skincare, medical services, leisure, and participatory experiences. Interest in routine skin-aesthetic care is also growing much faster than spending on cosmetic surgery.

An analysis of 3.3 million foreign-user cards by BC Card found that foreign visitor card spending in Korea increased 53.6% year on year during the first half of 2026. Medical spending approximately doubled. Spending on skin-aesthetic services rose 109.8%, compared with 35.5% growth for plastic surgery. Over the last three years, the skin-aesthetic share of medical spending increased from 32.6% to 67.5%, while the plastic-surgery share decreased from 46.2% to 21.3%.

These figures suggest that Korean beauty tourism is no longer defined only by major procedures.

International customers increasingly want to understand their current skin condition, experience accessible care, explore K-beauty products, and select services that fit their own concerns.

Against this background, ChoiceDx has introduced Dx-Self, a self-service AI analysis solution that moves skin analysis beyond professional consultation rooms and into retail stores, pharmacies, brand spaces, and tourism-oriented beauty locations.

What is Dx-Self?

Dx-Self is an unmanned kiosk solution designed to let customers capture and analyze their own skin, scalp, and hair condition without continuous operation by a professional.

On August 3, 2026, eNet News reported that ChoiceTech Korea had launched Dx-Self as a self-service kiosk for direct skin and hair analysis. The official ChoiceDx product page describes the solution as a contactless personalized service connecting analysis, product recommendation, and purchase.

Its key elements include:

  • self-service skin, scalp, and hair imaging;

  • step-by-step on-screen guidance;

  • AI analysis of skin, scalp, and hair information;

  • visual presentation of analysis results;

  • connection with relevant products or product categories;

  • integrated mounting of the professional Dx-Smart analyzer;

  • hygiene support including a built-in UV sterilization function;

  • kiosk-size and design customization for different spaces;

  • partner-specific UI and content configuration.

Dx-Self does not diagnose skin disease or medical hair-loss conditions. It provides non-medical analysis information that helps users understand their condition and explore beauty products and care services.

Why does “skin aesthetics over surgery” matter now?

1. Interest is shifting toward sustainable care

Cosmetic surgery can involve higher costs, recovery time, and psychological commitment.

Skin-aesthetic and skincare services allow customers to understand their condition, select lower-burden options, and repeat care over time.

The much faster growth in skin-aesthetic spending suggests that international demand is broadening from one-time transformation toward understanding and continuously managing the current condition. This is an interpretation of the disclosed spending data.

2. Medical care and shopping are becoming connected

A customer who receives a skin-aesthetic service may later look for soothing, moisturizing, sun-care, or functional skincare products.

Conversely, a shopper may begin with skin analysis and then become interested in professional consultation or care.

A BC Card representative quoted by NoCut News described an emerging medical-tourism ecosystem in which medical services and shopping are naturally connected.

Dx-Self can operate at this intersection.

It is not a medical-treatment device. It can serve as an interface connecting initial skin understanding with product and consultation discovery.

3. Images and structured data can cross language barriers

Language is one of the first obstacles international customers encounter when using Korean skincare services or products.

Ingredients, concerns, and care routines can be difficult to explain across languages.

A self-service interface that presents capture guidance, metric images, scores, and next steps in a consistent structure can make the first customer conversation more specific.

Instead of a vague statement such as “my skin feels bad,” the discussion can begin with clearer topics such as moisture, pores, pigmentation, or sensitivity-related information.

Four changes visible in foreign spending data

Foreign spending is growing rapidly

During the first half of 2026, foreign card spending in Korea increased 53.6%, while transaction volume increased 40.3%. Spending by Chinese visitors rose 82.7%. The number of cards used increased 56.6% for Chinese visitors, 46.8% for Singaporeans, 44.3% for Taiwanese visitors, 40.1% for Japanese visitors, and 30.6% for Americans.

Beauty services designed for only one language or one customer profile may struggle to serve this growth.

Demand is spreading beyond central Seoul

Foreign transaction volume increased 57.9% in Busan and 63.7% in Jeju. Myeong-dong remained the leading Seoul area by spending, while Samseong 1-dong newly entered the top five.

AI beauty analysis therefore has potential beyond selected stores in Myeong-dong or Gangnam.

It may also fit Busan, Jeju, outlets, malls, airport-adjacent districts, tourism pharmacies, and regional K-beauty retailers.

Travel is expanding from shopping to experiences and care

By transaction count, medical spending increased 75.3% and leisure and experience spending increased 121.7%. Shopping also grew 31.4%, but the faster rise in participatory and care-related spending is especially notable.

AI skin analysis can connect these areas.

For customers, it becomes an interactive beauty experience. For retailers, it can become a data-supported starting point for consultation and product discovery.

Skin aesthetics and pharmacy spending are growing together

Skin-aesthetic spending increased 109.8%, while pharmacy spending surged 1176.9%.

These figures do not prove that the same customers made sequential purchases.

They do, however, show simultaneous expansion in foreign demand related to skincare, dermocosmetics, pharmacies, and home-care products.

In this environment, AI analysis may help pharmacies and dermocosmetic retailers structure consultation by identifying the customer’s initial area of interest.

How can Dx-Self change the K-beauty journey?

A traditional cosmetics journey often begins like this:

find a famous brand→ browse popular products→ search reviews→ purchase

A Dx-Self journey can begin differently:

select a language→ choose skin, scalp, or hair analysis→ follow capture guidance→ review AI analysis→ identify priority interests→ explore related products or consultation→ decide on purchase or further care

The biggest difference is that the journey begins with the customer rather than the product.

After reviewing information related to moisture, sebum, pores, pigmentation, or sensitivity, customers can interpret a large product assortment through their own interests.

For scalp and hair analysis, customers may use information related to scalp surface condition, flakes, sebum, density, or thickness to explore shampoos, treatments, scalp tonics, and professional care.

Available metrics and recommendation methods depend on the installed hardware, software, product data, and operating configuration.

Why self-service analysis matters in beauty tourism

Customers can begin before consultation

International customers can start without making a consultation appointment or first calling a staff member.

This can lower the entry barrier because the experience does not begin with a long conversation.

It structures customer concerns quickly

Subjective statements such as “my skin feels dry” or “my scalp feels sensitive” can be organized into images and metric-based information.

The result becomes a starting point for the next conversation with staff or professionals.

It may reduce inconsistency across stores

When customers begin with the same analysis flow, staff can use a common result structure for consultation.

Standard training is still needed for interpretation and claims.

It can connect products with care services

Analysis may connect not only to cosmetics, but also to aesthetic programs, spas, scalp care, dermocosmetic consultation, and other services.

Customers with possible medical symptoms should be referred to qualified professionals.

It creates a memorable brand interaction

Customers who capture images and receive a personalized report may remember a store more clearly than customers who only view products.

Actual effects on dwell time, return visits, and conversion should be measured through operating data.

Self-service does not mean maintenance-free

A customer may complete the analysis alone, but the store still needs an operating framework.

On-screen guidance

The complete flow—from language selection to capture, retake, and result review—must be understandable without continuous assistance.

Capture quality

Face or scalp position, focus, distance, and lighting should remain within validated ranges.

Hygiene

The official ChoiceDx page states that Dx-Self integrates the professional Dx-Smart device and includes a UV sterilization function. Routine store cleaning and inspection are still necessary.

Error handling

Staff need a defined response for failed capture, network issues, and device errors.

Privacy and consent

When facial images, scalp images, or results are stored, the purpose, scope, retention period, and deletion process should be clearly communicated.

Product data

Recommended products may be discontinued, unavailable, or replaced. Product mapping requires ongoing updates.

Dx-Self can adapt to different stores and brands

Dx-Self is not limited to one fixed kiosk format.

According to the official ChoiceDx product page, the size, functions, and design can be customized according to the installation environment, with partner-specific UI and content configurations also supported.

Health-and-beauty retail

Customers can complete self-analysis first and then explore relevant skincare or haircare categories.

Pharmacies and dermocosmetics

Customers can review an area of interest before discussing related products with a pharmacist or consultant.

Skin-aesthetic and aesthetic centers

Visitors can complete a preliminary analysis before consultation, allowing professionals to combine results with habits and reported concerns.

Global cosmetics brands

Brands can connect a dedicated interface, metric explanations, and their own product categories.

Hotels, airports, and tourism sites

Dx-Self can operate as short-form K-beauty content within waiting or shopping journeys.

Pop-up stores and exhibitions

Analysis can guide visitors toward different products or demonstrations according to their results.

What does the rise of skin aesthetics mean for ChoiceDx?

The spending data does not directly prove demand or revenue for skin-analysis devices.

It does, however, demonstrate several market changes:

  • foreign spending in Korea is increasing rapidly;

  • spending is expanding from shopping toward medical and experiential services;

  • skin-aesthetic spending is growing much faster than plastic surgery;

  • demand is spreading beyond Seoul to Busan and Jeju;

  • pharmacy spending is rising alongside skin-aesthetic spending.

Dx-Self is not intended to replace a medical procedure within this market.

It can serve as the first digital touchpoint through which an international visitor understands skin, scalp, and hair information and explores K-beauty products and care.

At the beginning of the beauty-tourism journey, it supports experience and information. In later stages, it may connect to product discovery, professional consultation, and customer management.

Frequently asked questions

Does Dx-Self analyze only the skin?

No. The official ChoiceDx description states that customers can perform self-analysis of skin, scalp, and hair. Available metrics depend on the installed configuration.

Can international visitors use it?

They can when the installed system includes an appropriate multilingual UI and guidance. Available languages should be confirmed for each project.

Does it recommend medical skin-aesthetic procedures?

No. Dx-Self provides analysis and may connect users with beauty products or care information. It does not prescribe a medical procedure or diagnose disease.

Can it recommend cosmetics?

Depending on the operating configuration, it can display related products or categories. Recommendations are not medical prescriptions and should also consider existing products, preferences, and previous reactions.

Can it truly operate without an expert?

The primary journey is designed for customer self-service through on-screen guidance. Store operators remain responsible for device checks, hygiene, errors, product data, and privacy management.

Can Dx-Self be installed in a pharmacy?

The launch report describes Dx-Self as a solution designed for retail stores, pharmacies, and brand stores. The final setup should reflect space, consultation flow, and the local regulatory environment.

Is the result a medical diagnosis?

No. It is non-medical analysis information for understanding skin, scalp, and hair condition and supporting beauty consultation and product discovery.

K-beauty that begins with analysis, not surgery

International visitors are moving beyond the question of what to buy in Korea toward what kind of care and experience to receive.

The 109.8% increase in skin-aesthetic spending and the rise of its medical-spending share to 67.5% over three years demonstrate that change.

Future K-beauty spaces will need to provide more than shelves of products.

Customers should be able to understand their condition, connect the result with products and services, and complete the experience across languages and locations.

Not a major decision that begins with surgery,but a small K-beauty experience that begins with understanding today’s skin.

ChoiceDx Dx-Self connects skin, scalp, and hair analysis with self-service experiences, product discovery, professional consultation, and customer management.
